RuPay Credit Cards on UPI: How Linking Works & Which Cards Support It
If you've ever scanned a QR code at a store and wondered why your Visa or Mastercard didn't show up as a payment option, you're not alone. Right now, RuPay is the only card network in India whose credit cards can be linked directly to UPI. Once linked, your card stops being just a piece of plastic you tap at a POS machine: it becomes a funding source you can scan-and-pay with, just like a bank account, while every rupee you spend still gets billed to your credit card statement.
This guide walks through exactly how that linking works, which cards currently support it, and what actually matters when you're choosing one.
How RuPay-on-UPI Actually Works
When you link a RuPay credit card to a UPI app, the app essentially treats your credit line as a "virtual" funding account. You still scan the same merchant QR codes and use the same UPI apps; the only difference is which account gets debited. Instead of money leaving your savings account instantly, the transaction gets added to your credit card's outstanding balance, due at the end of your billing cycle.
Here's what the process looks like end to end:
- Open a UPI app that supports credit cards. Most major apps, including Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, and dedicated UPI-first apps like Freo, support this.
- Go to "Add Payment Method" or "Add Credit Card." This is usually found in your profile or payment settings.
- Pick your bank and card. You'll need to select the issuing bank and confirm it's a RuPay card registered to your mobile number. Visa and Mastercard cards won't appear as an option here since NPCI hasn't extended UPI linkage to them yet.
- Verify the card. Enter the last six digits and expiry date, then confirm with the OTP sent to your registered number.
- Set a UPI PIN for the card. This is a separate 6-digit PIN from your card's ATM PIN and from any UPI PIN you use for your bank account. You'll enter it every time you authenticate a payment.
Once that's done, the card sits alongside your bank accounts inside the UPI app, and you simply select it before scanning a QR code or paying a merchant.
Transaction Limits You Should Know
- First 24 hours after linking: transactions are capped around ₹5,000 per day as a fraud-prevention measure. This resets to your normal limit after a day. (Source)
- Standard per-transaction limit: up to ₹1 lakh for most merchant categories, though your bank and available credit limit can bring this down. (Source)
- Higher-limit categories: certain categories like education, healthcare, IPOs, and tax payments can go up to ₹5 lakh, subject to bank approval. (Source)
- Your credit limit is the real ceiling. Even if NPCI allows a ₹1 lakh transaction, you can't spend more than what's available on your card. (Source)
Popular RuPay Credit Cards That Work With UPI
Nearly every major Indian bank now issues at least one RuPay variant that's UPI-ready. A few worth knowing about:
- HDFC Bank – Tata Neu Infinity/Plus RuPay Credit Cards, HDFC MoneyBack+ RuPay Credit Card
- SBI Card – SBI Card PULSE, BPCL SBI RuPay Credit Card
- ICICI Bank – Coral, Rubyx, and Sapphiro RuPay variants
- Axis Bank – IndianOil Axis Bank RuPay Credit Card
- Bank of Baroda – BOBCARD Eterna and Premier RuPay Credit Cards
- Kotak Mahindra Bank – Kotak League RuPay Credit Card
- IDFC FIRST Bank – RuPay credit cards that offer 3X reward points on transactions above ₹3,000
What to Look for When Choosing a RuPay Card for UPI
Not every RuPay card treats UPI spends the same way, so it's worth checking a few things before you apply:
- Whether UPI spends actually earns rewards. Some cards exclude UPI transactions from their reward program entirely, or cap rewards on small-ticket UPI payments. Read the fine print before assuming your daily grocery scan earns points.
- Fuel and utility perks. Co-branded cards (like IndianOil Axis or Tata Neu) often give accelerated cashback on fuel, utility bills, or brand-specific spends, which is useful if that's where most of your money goes.
- Joining and renewal fees vs. welcome benefits. Compare the annual fee against the value of welcome vouchers, milestone rewards, and fee-waiver thresholds. A "free" card with weak rewards isn't necessarily cheaper.
- UPI-native reward structure. If most of your spending already happens through UPI rather than card swipes, a card designed around that, like Freo's RuPay card, may make more sense than a traditional card that treats UPI as an afterthought.
Key Things to Keep in Mind
- Merchant payments only. RuPay-on-UPI is built for person-to-merchant (P2M) payments: scanning QR codes and paying registered merchant UPI IDs. You can't send money to friends or family (P2P) using a credit card on UPI. (Source)
- Zero MDR under ₹2,000. NPCI has mandated no Merchant Discount Rate on UPI credit card transactions below ₹2,000, which is a big reason small merchants readily accept RuPay credit card scans instead of pushing back like they might with card machines. (Source)
- Interest-free period still applies. Since these are still credit card transactions, they fall within your regular billing cycle and interest-free period. Pay the bill on time and there's no interest, same as any other card purchase. (Source)
- Not every UPI app supports every bank yet. Coverage has expanded fast, but it's worth checking that your specific bank-app combination is live before assuming it'll work. (Source)
UPI Apps That Support RuPay Credit Card Linking
Visa and Mastercard credit cards currently aren't supported for direct UPI merchant payments; only RuPay cards work here. Apps that let you link a RuPay credit card include:
- Freo: A UPI-first app built around credit, letting you pay via UPI, earn cashback on transactions, and unlock a credit line, all tied to your RuPay card
- Google Pay: Add your RuPay credit card from the "Payment methods" section and set a UPI PIN to start scanning and paying at any merchant QR code
- PhonePe: Link a RuPay card under "Manage Payments → RuPay on UPI" to spend on credit while keeping your bank account untouched
- Paytm: Supports linking through "UPI & Payment Settings," so you can pay any UPI merchant and settle the amount later on your card statement
- BHIM: NPCI's own app, and the original launch platform for RuPay-on-UPI, letting you add a credit card the same way you'd add a bank account
- Kiwi: A UPI-first app built around a virtual RuPay credit card, designed specifically for scan-and-pay spending with cashback on everyday transactions
- MobiKwik: One of the earliest apps to support credit cards on UPI, letting you link a RuPay card via "UPI Transfers → Manage → Add Credit Card"
- PayZapp: HDFC Bank's own UPI app, built for linking HDFC RuPay credit cards and earning CashPoints on scan-and-pay spends
- Amazon Pay: Lets you link a RuPay credit card to Amazon Pay UPI for shopping, bill payments, and recharges, in addition to regular merchant QR payments
- Freecharge: Supports RuPay credit card linking for UPI payments alongside its recharge, bill payment, and FASTag services
- CRED: Lets members activate UPI on an eligible RuPay credit card from major banks and pay any merchant QR code while still earning CRED rewards
Most of these apps follow the same linking flow described above, so once you've done it on one, switching apps or adding a second card is usually a five-minute job.
