About International Spends Credit Cards

Best Credit Cards for International Spends in India - 2026

Every time you swipe your Indian credit card abroad or on an international website, a foreign currency markup is levied - typically 2-3.5% of the transaction value, plus GST. On a ₹3 lakh international spend, this amounts to roughly ₹6,000-₹10,500 in silent charges. Cards designed for international use eliminate or dramatically reduce this fee, saving significant money for frequent global travellers and international online shoppers.

Forex Markup Rates Compared

Card Forex Markup Annual Fee Notes
IDFC FIRST Wow! 0% Nil FD-backed secured card, no income proof needed
Niyo Global (Equitas Bank) Nil Nil Digital account + card built for travelers
AU Nomo 0.99% ₹199 (Nil from year 2) Secured card, complimentary lounge access
IDFC FIRST Wealth 1.5% + GST Nil Lifetime free, Priority Pass lounge access
Axis Bank Reserve 1.5% ₹50,000 + GST Ultra-premium, high reward rate offsets markup
RBL Bank iGlobe 1.5% ₹3,000 + GST Built specifically for NRI customers
SBI Card Miles Elite 1.99% ₹4,999 + GST Travel miles focus, lounge access
IndusInd Avios Visa Infinite 1.5% (preferred destination) / 3.5% (elsewhere) ₹10,000 + GST Markup varies by chosen destination - check terms
HDFC Infinia ~2.36% (2% + GST) ₹12,500 + GST High reward rate (~3.3%) offsets remaining markup

Understanding the Forex Markup Structure

The forex markup is typically made up of a network fee (Visa/Mastercard charge roughly 1% for currency conversion), a bank markup (the issuing bank's own margin), and 18% GST applied on top of the total markup. On a standard 3.5%-markup card, the effective charge including GST works out to about 4.1%. The zero and near-zero cards in the table above eliminate most or all of the bank's portion of that markup.

Genuinely Zero-Markup Options

IDFC FIRST Wow! (from IDFC FIRST Bank) and Niyo Global (from Equitas Small Finance Bank) are the two cards verified at a true 0%/Nil forex markup in this comparison. Both are also lifetime-free, though IDFC FIRST Wow! is a secured, FD-backed card - useful if you're building credit history without formal income proof, while Niyo Global is built specifically around a digital account and card designed for international spenders and students.

International Online Shopping

The rise of cross-border e-commerce means you don't need to travel to incur international transaction fees. Purchases on international websites, or subscription services billed in USD, EUR, or GBP, all attract the same forex markup as a physical transaction abroad. Cards with low or zero markup are valuable for habitual international online shoppers even without physical travel.

Dynamic Currency Conversion: Always Decline It

When paying abroad, the POS terminal may offer to charge you in INR instead of the local currency - this is Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). Always decline it. DCC rates are typically worse than the interbank rate, often worse than even a standard forex-markup card. Pay in local currency and let your card handle the conversion at its stated markup rate instead.

RBI Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) Considerations

For international credit card spends above ₹7 lakh in a financial year, TCS (Tax Collected at Source) of 20% applies under the LRS framework. This TCS is credited against your tax liability and is refundable when filing ITR. However, it creates a cash flow impact - heavy international spenders should plan accordingly and track cumulative spends across the financial year.

Prepaid Travel Cards vs. Credit Cards

Prepaid forex cards lock in exchange rates at loading time, hedging against rupee depreciation, but typically lack reward programmes. For most travellers, a zero or low-markup credit card - especially one like IDFC FIRST Wealth that also earns travel rewards - outperforms a prepaid card on a total-value basis, since you get both the markup savings and ongoing reward earnings.

How to Choose

1

Prioritise zero or low forex markup

The single most impactful feature for international spends is the forex markup rate. Cards with zero markup (IDFC FIRST Wow!, Niyo Global) save 3.5%+ compared to standard cards. Even a reduction from 3.5% to 1.5% is worth ₹4,000 on a ₹2 lakh international spend.

2

Check reward rates on international transactions

Some cards earn bonus points specifically on international (forex) transactions. A card earning accelerated points on forex spend can add a further 1-3% in redeemable value on top of the markup savings.

3

Verify international acceptance network

Visa and Mastercard are accepted in virtually all countries. American Express has lower acceptance in Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, and smaller merchants. For broad international acceptance, a Visa or Mastercard is the safer choice.

4

Consider LRS TCS implications for heavy spenders

If your international credit card spend exceeds ₹7 lakh in a financial year, 20% TCS is collected at source. This is a cash flow consideration, not an additional tax - it is credited against your liability - but it affects your available cash. Plan large international purchases accordingly.

5

Evaluate emergency card replacement services

When travelling internationally, emergency card replacement (typically within 24-48 hours) is a critical feature. Visa Infinite, Mastercard World, and Amex all provide emergency replacement services globally. Verify the process with your issuer before travelling.
